Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1963 was the date we started as sophomores at Lakes High School

We, Lakes High School Class of 1966, graduated June 8, 1966. June 8th of this year will be the 50th anniversary of our graduation. That’s what we’re celebrating Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, with a tour of Lakes High School and Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, with our class 50-year reunion dinner and program at the Emerald Queen Hotel in Fife. Let’s remember another date. Most of us attended Lakes all three class (sophomore/10th grade, junior/11th grade and senior/12th grade) years. It’s assumed (if you know for sure, tell us!) we started classes as sophomores at Lakes High School on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1963, because Monday, Sept. 2 was Labor Day 1963 holiday. Thus, on Sept. 3, 2016, it’ll be 53 years since we started as sophomores at Lakes. We knew (so to speak) nothing when we started as sophomores. Conversely, when we graduated we knew everything!

Can you find your cap and gown-clad self?

Reason we can have a 50-year reunion is because we graduated (as of June 8, 2016) 50-years ago. Do you question that? If so, here’s photographic proof. Photo does not show you, a member of Lakes High School Class of 1966, receiving your diploma during our graduation ceremony. But, it does show you in cap and gown in the Lakes Gym. When was this taken? It might have been June 5, 1966, prior to the Lakes Class of 1966 Baccalaureate Service in the gym. As a bonus, here’s a photo of cover of graduation printed program.

In June 1966, 'World Famous' Tom Murphy of KJR Radio was our senior breakfast speaker

"World Famous" Tom Murphy (photo) of Seattle's popular KJR Radio was surprise guest speaker at our Lakes Class of 1966 senior breakfast held a June school day morning in part of the Lakes High Cafetorium.

Another breakfast surprise was Arthur Stolz, Lakes senior dean, telling those in attendance about a (nonexistent) VW Beetle for sale at a low price newspaper (Suburban Times, Tacoma News Tribune?) ad. Lakes '66 classmate Rick Hill surreptitiously placed the ad which included Stolz family home phone number. The phone "rang off the hook," Stolz indicated. He invited Rick to the podium and gave him the ad billing Stolz received in the mail from the newspaper.

If you have more information about the breakfast, it can be added here: Per te oporteat mandamus comprehensam. Quaeque euismod deleniti cu ius, feugait complectitur eos an, ad soleat recteque mea.

You might want to 'Do the Puyallup'

When you’re in Lakewood/Tacoma/Fife to attend the 50-year reunion of Lakes Class of 1966, you’ll be only a few minutes’ drive to Puyallup, home of the annual Washington State Fair (“Puyallup Fair”). For 2016, the fair starts Friday, Sept. 2, and has its concluding day Sunday, Sept. 25. If you want to “Do the Puyallup” before or after Lakes ’66 reunion activities visit www.thefair.com for info.

Remembering Lakes Class of 1966 Senior Party cruising on Puget Sound

Our Lakes Class of 1966 graduation party took place cruising at night (June 8) and early morning (June 9) around Puget Sound in a State of Washington ferry boat with the band "The Surprise Package."

Party followed our 8 p.m. Wed. June 8, 1966, graduation ceremony in the Lakes High gym.

We took school buses from Lakes to ferry dock and the buses drove onto the ferry.

MV Kickitat and Kingston terminal (dock)

According to classmate Jim Nichols (James H. Nichols III) in 2019, the Lakes Class of 1966 graduation party boat in June 1966 was the MV Klickitat which departed from and returned to the Kingston (Kitsap County) terminal (dock). Most likely, the school buses transporting class members traveled the approximately 62 miles from Lakes High, across the Narrows Bridge and on to Kingston (Kitsap County). Reversed the route after the party concluded.

Like Lakes High School Class of 1966 trivia? Hop on board.

After the Lakes High School Class of 1966 graduation starting at 8 p.m. Wed., June 8, 1966, in the Lakes Gymnasium, (many/most?) classmates turned in their caps and gowns and boarded Clover Park School District school buses to the graduation party.

That destination was (which Washington State Ferries dock?).

The buses drove onto a ferry. Graduates left the bus and partied the rest of the night and into the morning of June 9. On board the ferry providing live music was the band Surprise Package, previously called the Viceroys and later American Eagle.

Below is a presumably accurate list of boats the Washington State Ferries had in operation in 1966. Which ferry was “ours?” What the dock onto which the school buses drove on and off?
